If you measure the intervals between the first strike to the next strike, etc., you will count 5 intervals between strikes. Since it takes five seconds to strike five intervals, it takes 1 second per interval. Between strike 1 and 12 there are 11 intervals of time, so it takes 11 seconds for the clock to strike 12.
